Renewing Our Devotion to God
Today's Reading
Old Testament
- Exodus 32-34
- Philippians 3
Devotion
In Exodus 32-34, we witness both a sobering failure and the amazing grace of God. The Israelites, impatient in Moses’ absence, create a golden calf to worship. This act of idolatry breaks their covenant with God, demonstrating their tendency to rely on their own understanding rather than trusting Him. Moses intercedes for the people, pleading for God’s mercy. In response, God reveals His character as compassionate and gracious, “slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness” (Exodus 34:6). The renewal of the covenant and the radiant face of Moses after meeting with God remind us of His desire for a restored relationship with His people despite their failures.
In Philippians 3, Paul reflects on his own transformation and pursuit of Christ. He renounces all confidence in his earthly achievements and status, considering them as “rubbish” compared to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ (Philippians 3:8). Paul presses on toward the goal of knowing Christ more deeply, saying, “I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me” (Philippians 3:12). His focus is not on past failures or successes but on the hope of eternal life and the glory of Christ.
These passages together remind us of the importance of renewing our devotion to God and keeping our focus on Him. Like the Israelites, we may falter in our faith, placing our trust in things other than God. Yet, God is always ready to forgive, renew, and draw us closer to Him. Like Paul, we are called to let go of anything that hinders our relationship with Christ and press on toward the goal of knowing Him more fully.
When Moses encountered God’s glory, it transformed him, causing his face to shine. In the same way, when we seek God’s presence and fix our eyes on Jesus, we are transformed to reflect His glory to the world. The journey of faith is not about perfection but perseverance. We press on, trusting that God, in His grace, will complete the good work He has begun in us.

Reflection Questions
- In what ways are you tempted to rely on earthly “idols” rather than trusting God fully?
- How can Paul’s example in Philippians 3 inspire you to let go of past accomplishments or failures and focus on knowing Christ?
- How can you intentionally seek God’s presence this week, allowing Him to transform you like He did Moses?
Prayer
Lord, thank You for Your mercy and grace, even when we falter in our faith. Forgive us for the times we have placed our trust in things other than You. Help us to let go of distractions and to fix our eyes on Jesus, pursuing Him above all else. Transform us by Your presence so that we may reflect Your glory in our lives. Strengthen us to press on toward the goal You have set before us, trusting in Your faithfulness every step of the way. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
