Called to Holiness and Confident in Hope
Today's Reading
Old Testament
- Leviticus 15-18
- Psalm 31
- Hebrews 6
Devotion
In Leviticus 15-18, God continues to give His people detailed instructions for living holy lives. These chapters address matters of bodily cleanliness, sexual purity, and proper worship. God commands His people to be set apart, saying, “You must not do as they do in the land of Egypt, where you used to live, and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you” (Leviticus 18:3). These laws emphasize the importance of being distinct from the surrounding nations, reflecting God’s holiness in every aspect of life.
Psalm 31 is a heartfelt prayer of trust in God. David declares, “In You, Lord, I have taken refuge” (Psalm 31:1). He acknowledges the challenges he faces but places his confidence in God’s unfailing love, saying, “My times are in Your hands” (Psalm 31:15). This psalm reminds us that God is our faithful protector and guide, even when we face difficulties or uncertainties.
Hebrews 6 encourages believers to move beyond the basics of faith and press on toward maturity. It warns against falling away and urges us to remain steadfast, trusting in God’s promises. The chapter highlights God’s unchanging nature, saying, “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure” (Hebrews 6:19). This hope is grounded in Jesus, who has entered God’s presence on our behalf as our eternal High Priest.
These passages together emphasize the themes of holiness, trust, and hope. Leviticus calls us to live distinct lives, reflecting God’s holiness in a world filled with compromise. Psalm 31 reminds us to trust God in all circumstances, placing our lives in His hands. Hebrews 6 assures us that we can hold firmly to the hope we have in Christ, who anchors our souls and leads us into God’s presence.
As believers, we are called to a life of holiness and trust, relying on the hope we have in Christ. Holiness is not about legalism but about living in a way that honors God and sets us apart as His people. Trust is not about avoiding difficulties but about placing our confidence in God’s unchanging love and faithfulness. Hope is not wishful thinking but a firm assurance grounded in God’s promises.
