Devotion

In Isaiah 17–19, we see God’s judgment unfolding against the nations—Damascus, Israel, Cush, and Egypt. These chapters reveal a sobering reality: even the most powerful cities and proud nations fall under the weight of their pride and idolatry. What once seemed strong and impenetrable becomes desolate. And yet, in the midst of this warning, a surprising hope emerges. God’s purpose is not just destruction—it is redemption. Egypt, once an enemy of God’s people, will one day speak the language of the Lord and be called His people. Judgment is never God’s final word; transformation is.

Psalm 62 offers a personal response to this divine authority and power. The psalmist declares that his soul finds rest in God alone. Salvation, strength, and security are not found in wealth, influence, or human schemes, but in the steadfast love of God. In the face of global upheaval, the heart finds peace by resting in God's unshakable character.

Then in 1 Corinthians 1, Paul speaks directly to the pride and divisions among the believers. He reminds them that God’s wisdom confounds the wisdom of the world. The message of the cross—foolishness to those who are perishing—is the very power of God to those being saved. Christ crucified is both the wisdom and power of God, even though it looks weak and shameful through the eyes of the world.

These three passages lead us to a deep truth: human pride always falls, but God's purposes always stand. Nations will rise and fall, intellect and status will fade, but God's saving work through Christ will never be overturned. His power is made perfect not through pride or strength, but through the humility and surrender of the cross.

This is good news for those who feel weak, unseen, or unqualified. God's kingdom is not built on status or credentials—it is built on dependence, humility, and trust. When our strength fades and our plans crumble, we are right where God's power shines brightest.

Reflection Questions

  1. In what ways are you tempted to rely on your own wisdom, plans, or strength instead of resting in God's?
  2. How does the message of the cross challenge the way you view success or spiritual maturity?
  3. Where in your life do you need to let go of pride and embrace the power of humility and surrender?

Prayer

Father God, You are my rock and my salvation. I confess that I often trust in my own strength or understanding instead of turning to You. Forgive my pride and remind me that true power is found in the cross of Christ. Teach me to rest in Your salvation, to stand firm in Your Word, and to boast only in Jesus. May I live each day humbled by grace and empowered by Your Spirit. Amen.
