Devotion
Jeremiah 17–20 reveals both the pain of a prophet and the faithfulness of God. Jeremiah describes the human heart as deceitful above all things, warning against trusting in human strength rather than the Lord. Yet even in his own discouragement, when he feels mocked and rejected, Jeremiah cannot hold back the Word of God—it burns within him like fire. His struggle is real, but God remains his refuge.
Psalm 77 echoes a similar cry of distress. The psalmist wonders if God has rejected him, if His love has ceased. But as he reflects on God’s mighty works in the past, he finds hope. Remembering what God has done becomes the anchor for trusting what He will do again.
James 2 calls believers to put faith into action. True faith cannot remain hidden or passive—it is seen in love, mercy, and good works. Just as Jeremiah’s words could not be contained, and the psalmist’s remembering led to renewed trust, so our faith must overflow into tangible acts of obedience and compassion.
Together, these passages remind us that authentic faith perseveres through doubt, discouragement, and opposition. It clings to God’s character, remembers His works, and lives out His truth.

Reflection Questions
- In what areas of my life am I tempted to trust in human strength rather than relying fully on God?
- When I feel discouraged or overwhelmed, how can I remind myself of God’s past faithfulness as the psalmist did?
- What is one practical way I can demonstrate living faith this week by serving or loving someone in need?
Prayer
Lord, You are my strength when my heart is weak and my faith feels small. Help me to trust You more deeply, even in discouragement or doubt. Teach me to remember Your faithfulness and to let my faith be active in love and good works. May my life show that You are my hope and refuge. Amen.
