Faithful Witness in a Watching World

Today's Reading

Old Testament
  • Jeremiah 35-38

New Testament
  • 1 Peter 2

Devotion

In Jeremiah 35, the Rechabites stand out as an example of obedience. They refused to drink wine because of the command of their ancestor, and God used their faithfulness as a contrast to Judah’s disobedience to His Word. Jeremiah 36–38 then paints the stark picture of Judah’s leaders rejecting God’s warnings, tearing up Jeremiah’s scroll, and persecuting him for proclaiming truth. Despite opposition, Jeremiah continued to speak God’s Word faithfully.

In 1 Peter 2, believers are called a chosen people, a royal priesthood, and a holy nation—set apart to declare the praises of God. We are also urged to live such good lives among others that even if we are opposed or slandered, our conduct points people toward God. Peter reminds us to follow in the footsteps of Christ, who endured suffering without retaliation, entrusting Himself to the Father.

Together, these passages highlight the importance of living faithfully in a world that may not always welcome God’s truth. The Rechabites model obedience, Jeremiah shows courage in suffering for God’s Word, and Peter calls us to be living witnesses of Christ’s light. Our faithfulness—both in word and action—becomes a testimony that glorifies God.

Reflection Questions

  1. The Rechabites were faithful to a family command—how much more should I be faithful to God’s Word? In what areas is He calling me to deeper obedience?
  2. Jeremiah faced rejection and suffering for proclaiming truth. How am I responding when obedience to Christ costs me something?
  3. 1 Peter 2 calls me to be a living witness. What opportunities do I have this week to let my actions and words reflect the character of Christ?

Prayer

Lord, give me a heart of obedience like the Rechabites, courage like Jeremiah, and Christlike humility as I live in this world. Help me to shine as Your witness, to honor You in both word and deed, and to endure faithfully even when following You is costly. May my life point others to Your grace and truth. Amen.
