Strength to Stand Firm

Today's Reading

Old Testament
  • Jeremiah 44-46

New Testament
  • 1 Peter 5

Devotion

In Jeremiah 44, the people living in Egypt stubbornly reject God’s warnings, clinging instead to the worship of false gods. Despite Jeremiah’s urgent pleas, they insist on following their own path, revealing hearts hardened against the Lord. Jeremiah 45–46 then widen the view, reminding us that God not only judges His own people but also the nations, showing that He is sovereign over all. Though His people face discipline, He also promises that He will not make a full end of them, offering hope even in judgment.

In 1 Peter 5, believers are called to humility under God’s mighty hand. Peter exhorts leaders to shepherd with care and urges all to cast their anxieties on the Lord, for He cares deeply for His people. He warns of the enemy, the devil, who prowls like a roaring lion, seeking to devour. Yet the promise is clear: if we resist him, standing firm in faith, the God of all grace will restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish us.

These passages together reveal both warning and encouragement. God calls us to reject stubborn self-will and instead walk in humble trust. Even in the face of opposition, trials, or spiritual attack, He promises His sustaining grace. Our strength does not come from ourselves but from the One who rules over nations, disciplines His children, and cares for His people.

Reflection Questions

  1. Are there areas in my life where I stubbornly resist God’s will, like those in Jeremiah 44?
  2. How can I practice humility by casting my anxieties on God instead of carrying them myself?
  3. What does it look like for me to stand firm against the enemy this week, trusting in God’s strength and grace?

Prayer

Lord, search my heart and reveal where I have resisted Your will. Teach me to walk in humility and to trust You with every burden. Help me to stand firm in faith against the enemy, knowing that You are my strength and my refuge. Thank You for Your promise to restore and uphold me through Christ. Amen.
