Devotion

Ezekiel 37–39 contains one of the most powerful images in all of Scripture—the valley of dry bones. God leads Ezekiel to a valley filled with lifeless bones and asks, Son of man, can these bones live? As Ezekiel obeys God’s command to prophesy, breath enters the bones, and they come to life, forming a vast army. This vision symbolizes God’s promise to restore His people, to breathe His Spirit into them, and to bring them back from despair to hope. Chapters 38–39 go on to show God’s victory over the nations that rise against Him, reminding us that His power is greater than any enemy and His purposes always prevail.

Psalm 87 celebrates God’s city, Zion—the place of His presence and blessing. It declares that all nations will one day find their home in Him, that people from every corner of the earth will say, This one was born in Zion. It’s a song of inclusion, hope, and joy, pointing to the future when God’s people, made alive by His Spirit, will dwell in His presence forever.

In John 13, Jesus reveals the depth of God’s love in the humblest of ways. He washes His disciples’ feet, showing that true greatness is found in servanthood. Then He gives a new commandment: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. In that moment, the love that brings life in Ezekiel’s vision takes human form in Jesus. His love restores what is broken, binds what is wounded, and breathes life into hearts once hardened by sin.

Together, these passages remind us that God’s love is not distant—it is active, humble, and powerful. He brings life to what is dead and calls us to reflect that same life-giving love to others. When we live by His Spirit and walk in His love, we become signs of His renewal in a world that desperately needs it.

Reflection Questions

  1. Where do I see “dry bones” in my life—places that need God’s Spirit to breathe new life and hope?
  2. How does Jesus’ example of humility and love in John 13 challenge the way I treat others?
  3. What steps can I take this week to live as someone made alive by God’s Spirit and marked by His love?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for breathing life into the dry places of my heart. Fill me with Your Spirit so I may live in the power of Your love. Teach me to serve others humbly, as Jesus did, and to bring hope where there is despair. Let my life reflect Your renewal and point others to the life found only in You. Amen.
