Devotion

In Daniel 4–6, we see three powerful rulers confronted by the God who reigns over all. In chapter 4, King Nebuchadnezzar learns that pride brings a fall. After boasting in his own greatness, he loses his sanity and his kingdom until he humbles himself before God. When he finally lifts his eyes to heaven, he declares that God’s dominion is everlasting. In chapter 5, Belshazzar mocks God by using the temple’s sacred vessels for a feast of arrogance. That same night, the handwriting on the wall announces his downfall. Then in chapter 6, Daniel’s integrity brings him to a lion’s den, but his faithfulness delivers him from harm. In every story, the message is clear: God humbles the proud and exalts the faithful.

In John 18, Jesus stands before earthly power as well—but His response is far different. Betrayed and arrested, He faces trial before Pilate and religious leaders. Yet, unlike the kings in Daniel, Jesus does not defend His own glory or grasp for authority. He calmly declares, My kingdom is not of this world. Though the rulers of the day think they hold His fate, Jesus stands as the true King—humble, steadfast, and sovereign even in suffering.

Together, these passages contrast human pride with divine humility. Daniel’s faith and Jesus’ composure both reveal what true strength looks like: trust in God’s rule, even when the world seems against you. Kingdoms rise and fall, but God’s purposes stand firm. Faithfulness, not power, is what endures.

Reflection Questions

  1. Where might pride or fear tempt me to rely on my own strength instead of trusting God’s authority?
  2. Daniel remained faithful under pressure, and Jesus stood firm in truth. How can I respond with courage and humility when my faith is tested?
  3. What does Jesus’ example of quiet strength and surrender teach me about true leadership and trust in God?

Prayer

Lord, You are the King above all kings. Thank You for showing me through Daniel and through Jesus that true power is found in humility and faithfulness. Help me to trust You when I face trials, to walk in integrity, and to rest in Your sovereignty. Teach me to lift my eyes to heaven and to remember that Your kingdom will never end. Amen.
