Devotion

In 2 Kings 2, the prophet Elijah is taken up into heaven, and Elisha steps into his calling with a bold request: a double portion of Elijah’s spirit. It’s not a request for fame or influence—but for the power to faithfully continue the work of God. And God answers. As Elisha picks up Elijah’s cloak, he steps into a new season of leadership, marked by bold faith and dependence on the Spirit.

In 2 Kings 3, Elisha becomes the voice of wisdom in a hopeless situation. Three kings face war and drought. They have no water, no strength, and no solution. Yet through Elisha, God provides—miraculously filling dry valleys with water and granting military victory. God’s power is not limited by human weakness. In fact, He often works through it.

Psalm 48 reminds us that God is not only powerful but present. He is our defender and refuge, and His presence in the city of His people is reason for worship and peace. We do not face life’s battles alone—God dwells among us.

Then, in Matthew 4, we see Jesus Himself led into the wilderness. There, hungry and physically weak, He faces Satan’s temptations. But unlike Israel in the wilderness—or the kings who panicked without seeking God—Jesus responds with Scripture, clarity, and unwavering obedience. His victory wasn’t won with force, but through truth. Every temptation was met with, “It is written…”

These passages together remind us that our wilderness moments are not wasted. Whether we are stepping into a new calling, facing overwhelming need, or being tested in isolation, God is present, powerful, and faithful to provide.

Reflection Questions

  1. Where in your life do you feel like you’re walking through a spiritual wilderness right now?
  2. What does it look like to respond to your current challenge with the truth of God's Word?
  3. How might God be calling you to step out in faith, like Elisha, and trust Him with more?

Prayer

God, when I feel dry, weak, or tested, remind me that You are with me. Help me to trust in Your power, respond with Your Word, and walk in bold obedience. Fill the empty places with Your Spirit, and lead me through every wilderness by Your strength. Amen.
