Devotion

Psalm 8 opens with wonder:  “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!” (Psalm 8:1).

David marvels at the glory of God in creation—and then is stunned by this truth:  “What is mankind that You are mindful of them, human beings that You care for them?” (Psalm 8:4). This psalm sets the tone for our reading: we are small, yet deeply significant to God. He has crowned us with glory and entrusted us with purpose. The weight of that glory leads us to seek wisdom in how we live each day.

Proverbs 11–13 pick up this theme by laying out the contrast between the righteous and the wicked, the wise and the foolish. These chapters are full of practical insight:

“The integrity of the upright guides them” (Proverbs 11:3)

“A gentle answer turns away wrath” (Proverbs 15:1)

“Walk with the wise and become wise” (Proverbs 13:20)

What we say, how we treat others, how we handle wealth, and who we associate with—all of it matters. Wisdom isn't merely about making good decisions; it's about forming a life that reflects the justice, humility, and grace of God.

In Romans 13, Paul brings all of this to a point:  “Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another.” (Romans 13:8). He calls us to live honorably, respecting governing authorities, fulfilling the law through love, and understanding the urgency of the hour:  “The night is nearly over; the day is almost here.” (Romans 13:12).

As children of light, we are to put aside deeds of darkness and clothe ourselves with Christ. This isn’t just moral behavior—it’s identity and calling. Wisdom, wonder, and righteousness converge when we live in the light of who God is and who we are in Him.

Reflection Questions

  1. In what areas of your life is God calling you to walk more fully in integrity and wisdom?
  2. Do you carry a sense of wonder like David did in Psalm 8, or have you become too focused on yourself or your circumstances?
  3. What does it mean for you today to "put on the Lord Jesus Christ" (Romans 13:14) in how you speak, respond, and love others?

Prayer

Majestic Lord, You are higher than all, and yet You care for me. Thank You for the glory You’ve given and the calling You’ve placed on my life. Help me to walk in wisdom, speak with kindness, and live in love. Teach me to put on Christ today—not just in what I do, but in who I am. Let Your light shine through me in a dark world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
