A Heart That Follows God
Today's Reading
Old Testament
- Deuteronomy 10-14
- Psalm 5
- Luke 8
Devotion
In Deuteronomy 10-14, God calls His people to wholehearted devotion. Moses reminds Israel of God’s love and faithfulness and urges them to respond with obedience:
"And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul?" (Deuteronomy 10:12)
God wants our hearts fully committed to Him, not just outward obedience. He commands Israel to be set apart, living differently from the nations around them. He calls them to worship Him alone and to trust in His provision.
Psalm 5 is a prayer of trust in God’s justice and protection. The psalmist declares that the Lord blesses the righteous and surrounds them with His favor. It is a reminder that God hears the prayers of those who seek Him and delights in their faithfulness.
In Luke 8, Jesus teaches about faith and obedience through parables and miracles. The parable of the sower illustrates different responses to God’s Word. Only the seed that falls on good soil—representing a heart that hears, understands, and obeys—bears fruit. Later, Jesus calms the storm and heals the afflicted, showing His power and calling His disciples to trust in Him completely.
These passages remind us that God desires more than words—He wants our hearts. A heart fully devoted to Him is like good soil, ready to bear fruit. A heart that trusts in Him will find peace in the storm. A heart set apart for Him will walk in obedience and worship.
