Devotion

In 1 Samuel 30, David faces devastating loss when the Amalekites raid Ziklag. But instead of giving in to despair, David "strengthened himself in the Lord." He seeks God's guidance before taking action, and through obedience, he recovers everything that was stolen. Even in disaster, David models how to turn to God first.

1 Samuel 31 and 1 Chronicles 10 recount Saul’s tragic end. His death is a sobering reminder that rejecting God's voice leads to ruin. Saul’s downfall contrasts sharply with David’s humility. It teaches us that leadership — and life — must be rooted in seeking and trusting God.

Psalm 106 reflects on Israel’s repeated failures and God’s continual mercy. Over and over, the people sinned, and over and over, God rescued them when they cried out. His mercy is greater than our worst mistakes.

In Acts 20, Paul gives a heartfelt farewell, urging the believers to stay faithful and guard their hearts. Like David and the psalmist, Paul reminds us that perseverance in Christ is the true mark of success — not worldly achievement.

Today, no matter how far we've fallen or how deep our losses, God invites us to strengthen ourselves in Him, repent where needed, and move forward in His mercy and strength.

Reflection Questions

  1. Where do you need to "strengthen yourself in the Lord" instead of giving in to fear or discouragement?
  2. Are there any areas of your life where you need to repent and return to God's mercy today?
  3. How can you encourage others, like Paul did, to stay faithful and close to Jesus?

Prayer

Father, thank You that Your mercy is greater than my failures. When I am weak, teach me to strengthen myself in You. Help me to repent quickly, trust deeply, and walk faithfully each day. May my life point others to Your goodness and grace. In Jesus' name, Amen.
