Devotion

In 1 Samuel 21–22, David’s situation grows desperate. On the run from Saul, he flees to strange places, sometimes resorting to deception just to survive. In the chaos, innocent people—like the priests of Nob—suffer at the hands of Saul’s cruelty. It's a dark and messy chapter in David’s story, yet even here, God’s providence and purposes are still at work.

1 Chronicles 5 recounts the genealogy and history of some of Israel’s tribes. Though many turned away from God at times, when they cried out to Him in battle and trusted in Him, “He granted their urgent plea because they trusted in Him” (1 Chronicles 5:20). Trust, even when imperfect, moves the heart of God.

Psalm 52 is David’s reflection on evil and injustice—likely written during this season of betrayal and fear. He boldly declares, "But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God. I trust in the steadfast love of God forever and ever" (Psalm 52:8). Though he saw wickedness prosper for a time, David clung to the goodness and faithfulness of the Lord.

Meanwhile, in Acts 15, we see the early church facing division over important issues of faith. Even here, the believers gather, seek the Spirit’s guidance, and ultimately choose unity over division. It wasn’t easy, but they trusted that God's grace was enough — for Jews and Gentiles alike.

Across all these readings, we see a powerful theme:  God remains faithful even when life feels broken, unjust, or confusing.

David’s story reminds us that hardships don't mean God has left us. The tribes in 1 Chronicles remind us that calling out to God with trust brings His help. The psalms teach us that we can worship in the middle of our pain. The church in Acts shows us that when we seek God together, He leads us into unity and strength.

Whatever hardships, uncertainties, or betrayals you face today, remember: God’s steadfast love is forever. Trust in Him.

Reflection Questions

  1. How can you hold onto trust in God even when life feels unjust or confusing?
  2. Where do you need to seek unity rather than division in your relationships or community?
  3. What would it look like for you to be a “green olive tree” planted in God's house today?

Prayer

Father, when life feels unfair or heavy, help me to trust that You are still working. Teach me to lean into Your steadfast love, just as David did. Help me pursue unity, just as the early church did. Plant me deeply in Your presence so that I may thrive, no matter what storms come. Thank You for Your faithful love that never fails. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
