Devotion
In Genesis 19-20, we encounter the story of Sodom and Gomorrah’s destruction and the consequences of choices made by Lot and his family. Lot chose to settle near Sodom, a city filled with wickedness, and though he was considered righteous, the environment around him impacted his life and family. God, in His mercy, sends angels to rescue Lot and his daughters, yet even in their deliverance, we see the pull of sin and compromise in their lives. This account challenges us to consider the influence of our surroundings on our faith and the importance of following God’s call to righteousness.
Psalm 1 contrasts the path of righteousness with the path of wickedness. It describes the blessed life of a person who delights in the law of the Lord, likening them to a tree planted by streams of water, which yields fruit and prospers. In contrast, the wicked are like chaff that the wind blows away. This psalm reminds us that our spiritual health and happiness come from aligning ourselves with God’s word, rather than allowing ourselves to be shaped by influences that draw us away from Him. God calls us to walk the path of righteousness, rooted in His truth and drawing strength from His guidance.
In Mark 7, Jesus addresses the Pharisees’ focus on external rituals while neglecting the heart’s inner condition. Jesus explains that it’s not what enters the body that defiles a person, but what comes from within—our thoughts, desires, and attitudes. He challenges us to examine our hearts and to seek true purity that begins with love, humility, and devotion to God. Just as Lot’s proximity to a sinful culture impacted his heart, Jesus warns us that what we nurture in our hearts directly affects our actions and character.
Each of these passages encourages us to choose the path of righteousness over compromise. Lot’s life shows us the dangers of letting our surroundings shape our values, while Psalm 1 promises blessings for those who delight in God’s word. Jesus calls us to guard our hearts against impurities that draw us away from God. Walking in righteousness means choosing God’s ways over the world’s, allowing His word to transform our hearts and keeping us on a path that leads to life and peace.

Reflection Questions
- Are there influences in your life that may be drawing you away from a closer relationship with God?
- How can you “delight in the law of the Lord” and plant yourself more deeply in His truth?
- What attitudes or thoughts might you need to surrender to God to keep your heart pure and focused on Him?
Prayer
Lord, thank You for the gift of Your word, which guides us on the path of righteousness. Help us to delight in Your truth and to seek a deeper relationship with You. Give us discernment to recognize any influences that draw us away from Your will, and give us the strength to choose Your ways over the world’s. Purify our hearts, Lord, and help us to walk in a manner that reflects Your love and holiness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
