God’s Presence in Unexpected Places
Today's Reading
Old Testament
- Genesis 28-29
- Mark 11
Devotion
In Genesis 28, Jacob is on the run from his family after deceiving his father and brother. During his journey, Jacob stops to sleep and dreams of a ladder stretching from earth to heaven, with angels ascending and descending. In this vision, God reaffirms His promises to Jacob, pledging to be with him, bless him, and make his descendants numerous. When Jacob awakes, he exclaims, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it” (Genesis 28:16). Jacob names the place Bethel, meaning “house of God,” marking this unexpected encounter with God’s presence. Despite Jacob’s mistakes and uncertainties, God shows up, reminding him that He is faithful and present in every season.
In Genesis 29, Jacob arrives in Haran, where he meets Rachel and eventually marries both Leah and Rachel through Laban’s deceitful schemes. His time with Laban brings both blessings and challenges, as Jacob’s journey toward God’s promises is marked by hard work, disappointment, and waiting. Yet even amid challenges, God remains faithful to Jacob, working through each step of his journey.
In Mark 11, Jesus enters Jerusalem to the praises of people who shout, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” Jesus then visits the temple, where He drives out those who misuse it, declaring that His Father’s house is meant to be a place of prayer. His bold actions reflect His authority and desire for genuine worship. Mark 11 ends with Jesus teaching about faith and prayer, emphasizing that we are to come before God with both trust and forgiveness in our hearts. Jesus reveals that true worship is about more than rituals; it’s about a sincere relationship with God, rooted in faith and grace.
Each of these passages reveals that God’s presence and promises are with us, even in unexpected places and challenging seasons. Like Jacob, we may encounter God in moments or places where we least expect Him, especially when we’re searching for direction or reassurance. Jesus’ actions in the temple remind us that God desires sincerity in our worship—an open, faith-filled heart rather than empty rituals. Jacob’s journey, filled with trials, mistakes, and God’s provision, shows us that God’s presence is not limited to our perfect moments but is with us through every step of our journey.
