Called to Freedom and Purpose
Today's Reading
Old Testament
- Exodus 1-3
- Galatians 5
Devotion
In Exodus 1-3, we encounter the story of Moses, born into a time of oppression for the Israelites, as they suffer under the bondage of the Egyptians. The Israelites cry out to God, and He hears them, moving to fulfill His promise to deliver them. God appears to Moses through the burning bush and calls him to lead His people out of slavery. Although Moses feels unqualified, God reassures him, saying, “I will be with you” (Exodus 3:12). This encounter reveals God’s heart for freedom and His power to use imperfect people for His purposes. Moses’ life, once seemingly lost, is transformed by God’s call and presence, setting the stage for Israel’s redemption from bondage.
Galatians 5 speaks of freedom in Christ. Paul urges the Galatians to live in the freedom they’ve been given, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery” (Galatians 5:1). Here, Paul is addressing the temptation to return to legalism or works-based righteousness, reminding the Galatians that they are called to live by faith, not by law. He contrasts the acts of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit, encouraging believers to be guided by the Spirit and not by their own desires. Through Christ, we are given freedom—not only from sin but to live a life characterized by love, joy, peace, patience, and all the fruits of the Spirit.
Together, Exodus 1-3 and Galatians 5 reveal God’s desire to set His people free and to call them to live with purpose and integrity. Just as God delivered Israel from Egypt, Jesus frees us from the bondage of sin and legalism. We are called to walk in the Spirit, reflecting His character and living out the freedom He has given us. God’s call to Moses reminds us that He chooses each of us, despite our pasts, doubts, or limitations, for a purpose that brings Him glory. When we answer that call and allow the Holy Spirit to work in us, we experience a life filled with purpose and power, able to serve others and bring God’s love into the world.
Moses’ encounter with God teaches us that true freedom is found in surrendering to God’s will, and Galatians 5 reminds us that freedom is not a license to serve ourselves but a call to serve others through love. As we embrace our identity in Christ and follow the Spirit, we experience a life of purpose and freedom, empowered to impact others for His kingdom.

Reflection Questions
- Are there areas in your life where you feel “in bondage” or stuck? How can you bring these to God, trusting Him to bring freedom?
- What does it mean to you to live in the freedom of Christ and to walk in the Spirit, as Paul describes?
- How can you step into the purpose God has for you, like Moses, despite any feelings of inadequacy?
Prayer
Lord, thank You for the freedom You have given us in Christ and the purpose You have for each of us. Help us to trust in Your power, to leave behind anything that holds us back, and to embrace the calling You have placed on our lives. Teach us to walk in the Spirit, to bear fruit that reflects Your character, and to live with love and purpose. Give us the courage to step forward, knowing that You are with us, just as You were with Moses. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
