When God Speaks, Are We Listening?

Today's Reading

Old Testament
  • Amos 1-3

New Testament
  • Matthew 13

Devotion

The book of Amos opens with a striking pattern: God pronounces judgment on the surrounding nations for their violence and injustice. But then the spotlight turns—not just to the nations, but to God’s own people. Israel, a nation blessed and chosen, has grown spiritually calloused. They’ve trampled the poor, silenced the prophets, and grown comfortable in religious routine while ignoring righteousness.

Amos 3:2 echoes with a convicting truth: “You only have I chosen of all the families of the earth; therefore I will punish you for all your sins.” With great blessing comes great responsibility. God’s people were not just called to worship—they were called to reflect His justice, mercy, and holiness. Yet they had grown deaf to His voice, complacent in their privilege.

In Matthew 13, Jesus teaches in parables—stories that both reveal and conceal truth. Some hearts, like hardened soil, refuse to receive His word. Others receive it with joy but fall away under pressure. Still others are choked by the worries and riches of this life. But the good soil—the one who hears and understands—bears fruit.

The connection between these passages is sobering: Hearing God’s Word is not the same as responding to it. Israel had access to prophets, covenants, and worship—but their hearts were distant. The crowds around Jesus heard His voice, but not all were willing to understand or change.

These scriptures ask us to reflect deeply: Are we merely hearing God's Word, or are we letting it shape us? Are we cultivating hearts like good soil—ready to receive, grow, and bear fruit?

God is still speaking today. Through His Word, His Spirit, and His people, He calls us to lives of integrity, justice, and wholehearted devotion. May we not just listen—but respond.

Reflection Questions

  1. Are there any areas in your life where you’ve grown spiritually complacent or deaf to God’s voice?
  2. Which “soil” best describes your current heart posture toward God’s Word—and how can you cultivate good soil?
  3. How can you not only hear but live out God's call to justice, mercy, and truth in your daily life?

Prayer

Lord, open my ears to hear Your voice and my heart to receive Your truth. Forgive me for the times I’ve grown numb or distracted. Make my life good soil—ready to respond, bear fruit, and reflect Your character in all I do. Amen.
