- Acts 13
Devotion
Following David’s victory over Goliath, he quickly rises in favor, yet his success brings him into conflict with King Saul. In 1 Samuel 18-19, we see Saul’s jealousy turn into violent opposition. Though David remains loyal, Saul repeatedly tries to kill him. Despite the danger, David does not take matters into his own hands—he trusts God to protect and guide him.
David’s heart cry in Psalm 59 reflects this season of his life. As he flees from Saul’s attempts on his life, he prays, “Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; protect me from those who rise up against me” (Psalm 59:1). Instead of seeking revenge, David puts his trust in God, declaring, “I will sing of your strength… for you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress” (Psalm 59:16).
In Acts 13, Paul and Barnabas also face opposition as they spread the Gospel. While some embrace their message, others reject them and stir up persecution. Yet, instead of being discouraged, they remain faithful to God’s calling. “And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 13:52). Even in the face of resistance, they knew that God was in control.
Opposition and hardship will come when we follow God’s will. Whether from jealousy, misunderstandings, or spiritual resistance, we will face trials. But like David and Paul, we must choose faith over fear. God is our refuge, our strength, and our defender. When we trust in Him, we can stand firm, knowing that He is always in control.

Reflection Questions
- Have you ever faced opposition for doing what is right? How did you respond?
- In times of difficulty, do you trust God as your defender, or do you try to fight the battle yourself?
- How can you, like David and Paul, choose faith over fear in your current challenges?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I thank You that You are my refuge and strength. When I face opposition, help me to trust in Your protection and guidance. Give me the faith to stand firm in trials, knowing that You fight for me. Fill me with Your joy, even in difficult moments, and help me to walk in obedience to Your will. In Jesus' name, Amen.
