Living a Life Set Apart for God
Today's Reading
Old Testament
- Numbers 15-18
- Psalm 113
- Colossians 3
Devotion
In Numbers 15-18, God reminds His people of the importance of obedience and holiness. He institutes offerings for unintentional sins, warns against rebellion (as seen in Korah’s uprising), and affirms Aaron’s priesthood as part of His divine plan. Through these passages, we see that God is serious about sin but also merciful in providing ways for restoration. The Israelites had to learn that their calling as God's people required faithfulness and trust in His leadership.
Psalm 113 is a beautiful hymn of praise that exalts God’s greatness and His care for the lowly: "The Lord is exalted over all the nations, His glory above the heavens. Who is like the Lord our God, the One who sits enthroned on high, who stoops down to look on the heavens and the earth?" (Psalm 113:4-6)
This psalm reminds us that God, though high and holy, cares deeply for us. He lifts up the needy and the broken, showing His love and mercy to those who trust in Him.
Colossians 3 calls believers to live holy lives, setting our hearts and minds on things above rather than on earthly desires. Paul instructs us to put to death our sinful nature and instead clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. He reminds us that in Christ, we are a new creation, chosen and dearly loved by God:
"Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God." (Colossians 3:2-3)
These passages together reveal a powerful truth: as God’s people, we are called to a life of holiness and worship. Just as the Israelites had to follow God's commands and trust His appointed leaders, we are called to submit our lives to Christ, living in obedience and love. We are not to be ruled by sin or earthly desires but transformed by His Spirit, reflecting His love and glory.
No matter our past mistakes, God lifts us up, restores us, and calls us His own. He provides the way for us to live in holiness—not by our own strength, but through Christ, who is our life.

- How does knowing that you are chosen and loved by God impact the way you live daily?
- What practical steps can you take today to "set your mind on things above," as Colossians 3 teaches?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for calling me to a life of holiness and setting me apart for Your purposes. Help me to surrender my heart fully to You, casting off anything that hinders my walk with Christ. Thank You for lifting me up in Your mercy and covering me with Your love. May my life reflect Your goodness, and may I keep my mind set on the things above. In Jesus' name, Amen.
