Stepping Forward in Faith
Today's Reading
Old Testament
- Joshua 1-4
- Psalm 143
- Luke 14
Devotion
As the Israelites stand on the edge of the Promised Land in Joshua 1-4, God gives Joshua a clear command:
"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9)
This was a moment of transition and uncertainty. The people had wandered for 40 years, and now they were called to step forward in faith, trusting God's presence and promises. When they approached the Jordan River, it was at flood stage, yet as soon as the priests carrying the Ark stepped in, the waters parted, allowing the people to cross on dry ground (Joshua 3:15-17).
In Psalm 143, David cries out to God in desperation:
"Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life." (Psalm 143:8)
Like Joshua and the Israelites, David recognizes that trusting God means seeking His guidance and stepping forward in faith, even when things seem overwhelming.
In Luke 14, Jesus challenges His followers to count the cost of discipleship:
"Whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple." (Luke 14:27)
Faith is not passive; it requires bold steps. Just as the Israelites had to physically step into the Jordan before seeing God's miracle, we too are called to step forward in obedience, trusting that God is leading us. Following Jesus is a journey that requires commitment, courage, and surrender.

Reflection Questions
- What "Jordan River" are you facing in your life right now? Where is God asking you to step forward in faith?
- How can you seek God’s direction like David did in Psalm 143?
- Are you willing to count the cost and fully follow Jesus, even when the road is uncertain?
Prayer
Father, give me the courage to step forward in faith, knowing that You are with me. When I feel uncertain or afraid, remind me of Your promises and unfailing love. Help me to seek You daily and walk in obedience, trusting that You are leading the way. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
