Today's Reading
Old Testament
- Genesis 24-25
- Psalm 4
- Mark 9
Devotion
In Genesis 24, we read the story of Abraham’s servant seeking a wife for Isaac. Abraham, in his old age, instructs his servant to find a wife for Isaac from his homeland, trusting God to guide this important decision. The servant prays for God’s guidance, and God leads him to Rebekah, who fulfills his prayer’s specifics. This story highlights the importance of trusting God’s faithfulness and seeking His guidance in life’s significant decisions. Abraham’s servant models a faith-filled life, dependent on God’s provision and timing, which reminds us that we can approach our own decisions with prayer, trusting God’s wisdom over our own.
Psalm 4 reflects a prayerful trust in God amid distress. The psalmist calls out to God for relief and speaks of God’s faithful care, encouraging us to place our confidence in God even when things feel uncertain. The psalmist’s words, “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8), remind us that God’s presence is our peace and security. When we surrender our worries to Him, He fills us with a peace that allows us to rest, even in challenging times.
In Mark 9, we see Jesus transfigured before His disciples, revealing His divine glory. Later in the chapter, He teaches His disciples about true greatness, calling them to serve others humbly and selflessly. We also witness Jesus healing a boy possessed by a spirit that the disciples couldn’t cast out. When the boy’s father cries out, “I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24), Jesus responds with compassion, healing the boy and demonstrating His power over all things. This story reminds us that even when our faith feels weak, Jesus invites us to bring our struggles to Him. He meets us where we are, working in our lives even amid doubts and uncertainties.
These passages remind us that a life of faith means trusting God’s guidance and surrendering our desires to Him. Abraham’s servant sought God’s will for Isaac, and God answered his prayer. The psalmist surrendered his fears to God and found peace. And the father in Mark 9 brought his struggle with belief to Jesus, who met him with compassion and power. God calls us to trust Him in our daily lives, knowing that He is faithful and His plans are good. In moments of doubt, we can ask God to strengthen our faith, resting in His ability to work in our lives.
