Devotion

1 Samuel 17 tells one of the most well-known stories in the Bible—David and Goliath. While the Israelites cowered in fear before the giant, David stepped forward, not with human strength, but with faith in the living God. “The battle is the Lord’s” (1 Samuel 17:47), David declared before defeating Goliath with a single stone. His confidence was not in his own ability but in God’s power.

Psalm 142 shows another moment of dependence on God. David, later in life, finds himself in a cave, crying out for deliverance. He acknowledges that his only refuge is in the Lord. This reminds us that whether in a battlefield or a dark place of despair, God is always our strength.

In Acts 12, we see another miraculous deliverance—Peter is imprisoned, but the church prays earnestly for him. God responds by sending an angel to free him, showing that He alone has power over every situation. Just as David trusted God for victory, and Peter experienced divine rescue, we, too, can rely on God to fight our battles.

God does not call us to face giants, struggles, or trials in our own strength. Like David, we must trust in His power. Like Peter, we must pray and believe that God will make a way. When we put our faith in Him, we will see that the battle truly belongs to the Lord.

Reflection Questions

  1. What "giants" are you facing in your life right now?
  2. How can you shift your focus from your own strength to God’s power?
  3. Do you fully trust that God is fighting for you in every battle?

Prayer

Lord, I thank You that the battle is Yours, not mine. Help me to trust You like David did, knowing that You are greater than any challenge I face. Strengthen my faith and remind me that my victory comes from You alone. In times of trouble, may I turn to You in prayer, just as Peter’s community did. I put my hope in You today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
