Devotion
From the beginning of Genesis, we encounter God as the Creator who speaks all of creation into being, bringing light to darkness, life to the void, and order to the chaos. In Genesis 1 and 2, God shapes the universe with purpose, declaring His handiwork “good.” The sun, moon, stars, seas, plants, animals, and finally humanity—each bears His imprint, carefully crafted and deeply valued. His intention for creation is not only life but abundant life, where humankind dwells in communion with Him, stewarding creation in love and reverence.
Psalm 19 echoes this theme, poetically proclaiming, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.” Creation itself is a testimony, speaking silently yet powerfully of God’s glory. Each sunrise, each leaf, and each season testifies to His majesty. It reminds us that while God reveals Himself through Scripture, He also reveals Himself through the world around us.
The reading from Mark 1 shows us God’s creative power and His redemptive power side by side. Here we see Jesus entering the world, bringing God’s kingdom near and inviting us into new life. Jesus, the same Word that was with God in the beginning (John 1:1), now speaks and heals, bringing the broken into restoration and calling the lost back to God. Just as God breathed life into Adam, Jesus breathes life into all who believe in Him, redeeming us to fulfill the purpose for which we were made.
Each of these passages reveals a layer of God’s character: His power, His creativity, His care for creation, and His heart for relationship with us. As we look to the world around us, we can be reminded of the intricate care with which God created each part of it, including us. As we look to Jesus, we see God’s commitment to renew us, bringing life and wholeness even where we see brokenness.
