Devotion

The reign of King Rehoboam begins with a crossroads. When the people of Israel ask him to lighten the heavy burden placed on them by his father Solomon, he has a choice: to listen with humility or lead with pride. He seeks counsel, but only follows the advice that appeals to his ego—the counsel of his peers who tell him to rule with a heavier hand. As a result, the kingdom is torn in two.

Rehoboam’s story is a powerful warning: leadership without humility leads to division. The people weren’t asking for power, just compassion. But Rehoboam missed the opportunity to serve by choosing to assert control instead. His failure to listen cost him nearly everything.

In contrast, Titus 1 gives us a picture of godly leadership. Paul instructs Titus to appoint elders who are trustworthy, self-controlled, hospitable, and devoted to sound doctrine. The leaders of God’s people are called not to dominate, but to guide with integrity. They are to correct gently, protect truthfully, and lead by example.

These passages remind us that all of us—whether leading families, teams, ministries, or simply influencing those around us—are called to lead like Christ: not with pride, but with patience; not with control, but with character. True leadership listens. It builds up rather than tears down. And it always points people back to the grace and truth of God.

Reflection Questions

  1. When faced with conflict or leadership decisions, whose voices do you tend to listen to first?
  2. In what areas of your life are you being called to lead with more humility and grace?
  3. How does your influence reflect the character of Christ to others?

Prayer

Lord, give me a heart that listens and a spirit that leads with humility. Help me to use whatever influence I have to serve, not to control. Shape me into a leader who reflects Your truth, Your grace, and Your love. Amen.
