A Heart That Trusts in God
Today's Reading
Old Testament
- 1 Samuel 14
- Psalm 124
- Acts 10
Devotion
In 1 Samuel 14, Jonathan steps out in faith, trusting that God can bring victory whether through many or through few. While King Saul hesitates, Jonathan and his armor-bearer take bold action, believing that nothing can stop the Lord from saving His people. Their courage leads to a great victory, showing that God honors faith and trust in Him, not human strength alone.
Psalm 124 echoes this theme: “If the Lord had not been on our side… our enemies would have swallowed us alive” (Psalm 124:1-3). It is a reminder that our victories are not by our own strength, but by God’s power and grace. When we rely on Him, He fights our battles.
In Acts 10, we see another powerful work of God—this time in the heart of Peter. Through a vision, God reveals that the gospel is for all people, not just the Jews. Peter’s obedience in going to Cornelius, a Gentile, demonstrates that God's plan is greater than human traditions or expectations. Like Jonathan, Peter steps forward in faith, and as a result, many come to know Christ.
Both Jonathan and Peter remind us that when we trust in God and follow His leading, He does mighty things. Whether facing a battle or stepping into new and uncomfortable places, God is always with us, guiding and empowering us.

Reflection Questions
- In what areas of your life do you need to step out in faith like Jonathan?
- How can you remind yourself daily that your strength comes from God, not yourself?
- Is there a calling or opportunity that, like Peter, you are hesitant to follow because it challenges your expectations? How can you trust God’s plan?
Prayer
Lord, I confess that I sometimes hesitate instead of stepping forward in faith. Help me to trust that You are always in control, and that nothing is impossible for You. Give me the courage of Jonathan to move forward when You call and the obedience of Peter to follow Your leading, even when it challenges my understanding. May I always walk in faith, trusting in Your strength and guidance. In Jesus' name, Amen.
