God’s Sovereignty and Our Response
Today's Reading
Old Testament
- Numbers 22-25
- Luke 1
Devotion
In Numbers 22-25, we encounter the story of Balaam, a pagan prophet summoned by King Balak to curse Israel. Despite Balak’s persistent requests, Balaam is unable to speak anything but what God allows, even blessing Israel instead of cursing them. This passage reveals God's sovereignty—no one can stand against His plans for His people. However, in Numbers 25, Israel falls into sin, worshiping Baal and engaging in immorality, which leads to God’s judgment. Even after being divinely protected, they stumbled due to their own disobedience.
In Luke 1, we see a contrast in responses to God’s sovereignty. Zechariah, though a priest, doubts the angel’s message that he and Elizabeth will have a son (John the Baptist) in their old age. Because of his unbelief, he is struck mute until the prophecy is fulfilled. Meanwhile, Mary, a young girl, humbly accepts God’s plan for her to give birth to Jesus, responding with faith:
"I am the Lord’s servant," Mary answered. "May your word to me be fulfilled." (Luke 1:38)
These passages teach us an important lesson: God is in control, and our response to His will matters. Balaam could not alter God’s plan, but the Israelites still fell into sin by their own choices. Zechariah doubted and faced temporary consequences, while Mary embraced God’s will with faith and humility.
Like Mary, we are called to trust in God’s promises, even when we don’t fully understand them. When faced with challenges or temptations, will we doubt, rebel, or trust and obey?

Reflection Questions
- Are there areas in your life where you struggle to trust God's plan?
- How do you respond when faced with temptation or challenges to your faith?
- How can you cultivate a heart like Mary’s, ready to say, “I am the Lord’s servant”?
Prayer
Lord, You are sovereign over all things, and Your plans cannot be stopped. Help me to trust in Your will and follow You with faith and obedience. Keep me from falling into sin and strengthen my heart to walk in Your ways. Like Mary, may I have a willing spirit to say, “May Your word be fulfilled in my life.” In Jesus’ name, Amen.
