God’s Presence in the Midst of Darkness
Today's Reading
Old Testament
- Genesis 38-40
- Mark 15
Devotion
In Genesis 38-40, we read the stories of Judah and Tamar, and of Joseph’s trials in Egypt. Genesis 38 shows us Judah, a man who has drifted from God’s ways, deceiving and being deceived, yet ultimately recognizing his own faults. In Genesis 39, we turn back to Joseph, who is unjustly imprisoned after refusing the advances of Potiphar’s wife. While in prison, however, God is with him, blessing him and giving him favor. In Genesis 40, Joseph interprets the dreams of Pharaoh’s cupbearer and baker, but he remains in prison despite his plea for help. In each situation, we see God’s presence with His people, even in the darkest and most unjust circumstances.
Mark 15 describes the crucifixion of Jesus. Jesus is betrayed, mocked, and abandoned, enduring incredible suffering and pain. Despite His innocence, He is condemned to die, fulfilling His mission to redeem humanity. Amid this immense suffering, Jesus cries out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Mark 15:34). Yet, even in this moment of agony, God’s plan of salvation is being fulfilled. Jesus’ willingness to bear the weight of sin on the cross demonstrates God’s love and commitment to rescue His people.
These passages remind us that God is with us in our most challenging and painful moments. Like Joseph in prison, or Jesus on the cross, we may face times when we feel abandoned or unjustly treated. Yet God’s presence never leaves us, and He continues to work through every situation, even when we don’t understand how. Joseph’s faithfulness amid trials and Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice on the cross show us that God can turn even the darkest moments into part of His redemptive plan. Our call is to trust in His presence and purpose, knowing that He is with us and that His promises are true.
