Devotion

In 2 Samuel 21–23, David nears the end of his life. These chapters are a blend of reflection, battles, and praise. He recounts God’s deliverance in a long poetic song (chapter 22), almost identical to Psalm 18—a song written earlier in his life but fitting for this reflective moment.

“The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer... I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I have been saved from my enemies.” (2 Samuel 22:2–4; Psalm 18:2–3)

David doesn’t boast about his victories. Instead, he exalts God as the One who strengthened, protected, and sustained him. Even after years of war, failure, and sorrow, David declares: “You, Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.” (Psalm 18:28)

This is a powerful reminder: Our testimony isn’t about our record—it’s about God’s faithfulness.

That’s exactly what Romans 3 teaches. Paul writes that no one is righteous on their own—not David, not Paul, not us.  “There is no one righteous, not even one... for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:10, 23)

But the good news is that righteousness doesn’t come from performance—it comes through faith in Jesus:  “This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.” (Romans 3:22)

David, despite his failures, trusted in the mercy of God. His strength, salvation, and security were not in his perfection, but in God’s unshakable grace.

Whether you’re in the middle of a storm or looking back over years of ups and downs, you can say with David:  “He is a shield for all who take refuge in Him.” (Psalm 18:30)

Reflection Questions

  1. Where have you been tempted to rely on your own record instead of resting in God's righteousness?
  2. How have you seen God be your “rock” in times of trouble or transition?
  3. What would it look like to live today from a place of grace instead of guilt or self-effort?

Prayer

Lord, You are my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer. I know I fall short, but You never fail. Thank You for giving me righteousness through Jesus—not because I earn it, but because You are merciful. Help me to trust in Your strength and live in the freedom of Your grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
