Devotion

In Proverbs 14–15, we see that wisdom is not just about knowledge—it’s about how we build our lives and treat others. These chapters contrast the wise and the foolish in how they speak, how they respond to correction, and how they relate to others.

“The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.” (Proverbs 14:1)

“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” (Proverbs 15:1)

Every day, we are either building up or tearing down—our homes, our relationships, our witness. These proverbs remind us that words matter, attitude matters, and humility is the gateway to wisdom:  “The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom, and humility comes before honor.” (Proverbs 15:33)

In Romans 14, Paul addresses a different kind of wisdom: how to live in community with other believers who don’t always see things the same way. Some believers in Rome felt convicted about eating certain foods or observing certain holy days, while others did not. Paul’s answer isn’t to pick a side—it’s to walk in love and honor the Lord in all we do.

“Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.” (Romans 14:19)

Paul reminds us that we belong to the Lord, and because of that, we’re called to walk in grace. It's not about uniformity; it’s about unity rooted in love. Just as wisdom builds a house, grace builds a body.

Reflection Questions

  1. Are there areas in your life where your words or reactions may be tearing down rather than building up?
  2. What does it look like for you to “make every effort” toward peace and mutual edification in your relationships, especially within the body of Christ?
  3. Where do you need to extend more grace to fellow believers who think or act differently than you?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of wisdom and the example of Christ. Help me to build wisely—with my words, my actions, and my attitude. Teach me to walk humbly before You and to love others with grace, even when we disagree. Let my life be marked by peace, gentleness, and a desire to edify others for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
